AWeber Email Marketing Review
Pricing: $19/month & up (See below – There is a free trial offered)
I’m writing this AWeber email marketing review for small business owners who are in the same position I was in about 10 years ago when I started a business.
One thing I kept hearing from all the online gurus in this age of the Internet was that every small business needs to build an email list to market to their current customers and best prospects.
Because an email list is a valuable asset. People don’t buy until their ready, so you want to be top of mind when they are. Email marketing will help you do that.
So, I started the search for an email service provider, and I quickly got overwhelmed.
Dazed And Confused About Email Marketing
There were so many different providers with a wide range of features, but I didn’t even know what I needed other than to build a list and send a simple email.
So, first I read up on the subject of email marketing and decided I didn’t need anything fancy or complicated.
However, I wanted something that was powerful enough to handle everything I may need to do in the future as I learned more about email marketing.
How To Get A Quick Education
I searched online for competitors’ websites to see what they were doing with email, and saw that they were using forms to capture leads.
So, I filled out their forms and took note of what they were sending me. That’s where my education really began.
In the process I discovered the need for tools to do things like build lead capture forms, subscriber management, list management, autoresponders and help making sure I followed legal requirements (CAN-SPAM Act).
Before I made my decision on which email service to use, a couple of clients had me work on their email marketing campaigns. This helped me to learn on the fly about what email marketing could do for a small business.
I ended up using several different email marketing platforms like GetResponse, Constant Contact and AWeber. I liked them all just fine, but I became more comfortable with AWeber.
I’ve used other email marketing services as well over the next few years, but I chose AWeber from the beginning and have never had the desire to switch.
Following are some of the reasons why and a roundup of helpful information.
What Is AWeber
AWeber is an email marketing platform used by businesses to communicate with clients and prospects. It has been a leader in the email marketing industry for more than 20 years and at the forefront of autoresponder technology.
You can capture leads using their forms, manage email lists and send autoresponder campaigns, newsletters and individual broadcast emails.
AWeber was founded in 1998 by CEO Tom Kulzer and is based in Chalfont, Pennsylvania.
Who Is This Product For?
Typical clients of AWeber tend to be small business owners, entrepreneurs, non-profit marketers, bloggers, podcasters and others who want to communicate with customers and prospects for their business.
This AWeber Email Marketing Review will help you discover if it’s right for your small business.
AWeber isn’t the cheapest or the most expensive email marketing service provider.
Their pricing is based on the following tiers where the number of your subscribers are concerned.
There are no long-term contracts and no set up fees, so you can just dig in and start your email marketing program from the get go.
For payment, AWeber accepts Visa, Mastercard, American Express and Discover credit cards. They also accept checks and money orders.
Overall, with all that you get for the money, I think AWeber offers an excellent value.
If you’re new to email marketing, you’ll probably want to start with the basics and grow into the advanced capabilities as you go. AWeber will help you do that.
When you do start to get more sophisticated, AWeber has a full set of features that will be there waiting for you to use them… more than I think you would care to read in my AWeber Email Marketing Review. Following are some of the more popular ones.

List Cleaning Services
If a service you want to integrate with your email marketing isn’t listed, you can contact AWeber to get the full list or go to their website for more information.
An autoresponder is a computer program that sends emails automatically when triggered, like when a new subscriber signs up on the subscription form on your website.
This new subscriber is added to your list and then they can be sent a series of email messages over time via your autoresponder.
Once you have an autoresponder set up, they work like a reliable employee communicating with your prospects and customers 24/7/365. And they don’t call in sick.
You spend the time to set up a sequence, and from that point your work is done. The autoresponder sends out your messages when you want them delivered.
AWeber’s autoresponder system has never failed me. Not once. I rely on it, and it performs.
If you want more information about autoresponders you can take a look at this Wikipedia article.
To save time, and to make your email marketing easier, AWeber has hundreds of email templates set up and ready for you to use.
Also, if you want to design your own email you can use their “drag and drop” editor. Just like it says, you drag and drop different design elements into an email to make it look just the way you want it.
If you have the coding skills, you can also design your own emails using HTML.
Without getting your emails into your intended recipient’s inbox, any email marketing service is worthless.
Deliverability is an area where Aweber shines.
Their records indicate that they have upwards of a 99% deliverability rate. What I can tell you is that I’ve never had any issues with their deliverability.

Pros And Cons
Here are my thoughts on AWeber at a glance.
- Very high email deliverability rate.
- Easy to use for setting up campaigns and individual email broadcasts.
- The dashboard is simple and intuitive.
- It comes with a very large library of email templates.
- Award winning support and customer service.
- Excellent overall value for the money.
- Simple to use for beginners, but powerful tools for advanced users.
- Allows both single and double opt-in for new subscribers.
- It’s easy to import lists using different file types.
- It integrates well with hundreds of third-party tools and apps.
- Autoresponder sequences (campaigns) are easy to set up and use.
- The email templates are responsive.
- Good reporting features.
- The sign-up forms are quick and easy to design and then put on any website.
- You can try it for free for the first month.
- There are cheaper options that might appeal to you if you’re focused on price.
- While there are a lot of templates to choose from, I don’t think most of them are very appealing. (I like to design my own anyway)
- The forms editor is easy to use, but sometimes seems a little limited (like for a horizontal layout).
- Aweber has been slow to make changes they say are on their to-do list.
Alternatives For AWeber Email Marketing Platform
If you want some alternatives to AWeber you can see them below. I’ll be writing reviews soon for the first two: GetResponse and Constant Contact.
Bottom line… I like them as well, but I personally like AWeber a little better and continue to use it for my own business.
- GetResponse (review to come)
- Constant Contact (review to come)
For your information, following are some additional alternatives to AWeber. I’ve used some of them over the years, as well.
If you want to see how easy it is to do a basic email marketing setup you can watch the short video below.
Wrapping It Up – AWeber Email Marketing Review
I’ve been using AWeber for more than 10 years now, and I’m very happy with them.
I don’t use a lot of the advanced features very often. I mainly use AWeber to build and manage my email lists, basic email marketing campaigns and the autoresponders.
AWeber has all the basic things you would expect, and it’s great for beginners. They also have the functionality included for intermediate and advanced email marketers.
Sometimes it seems like they get a little behind when it comes to their product development, but that hasn’t caused any problems for my email marketing efforts.
Honestly, I think all of the email marketing services mentioned here would probably work just fine for most small business owners. You just have to find one you like and go with it.
My choice is AWeber. You may prefer to go a different direction. So, if you have the time, keep doing your research.
If you decide to go with Aweber, there’s no risk to signing up now because of the free trial.
And, if you have little or no experience with email marketing you may want to click here to go to that email marketing short course I mentioned earlier.
